Find Big Screens

What's the best movie format?

A friendly guide to the wonderful (and confusing) world of premium large screen formats.

02

What does each format brand mean?

Brands signal the format family. They don't guarantee screen size, shape, or quality.

IMAX

The scale pick. Bigger screens and sometimes a taller image — but IMAX screens vary more than any other label.

Usually means

A premium auditorium designed for scale and immersion.

Doesn't guarantee

The largest screen near you, laser projection, a 1.43-capable screen, or expanded scenes for this movie.

Screen size, aspect ratio, projection type, and whether the movie expands in IMAX.

03

Does Aspect Ratio matter?

Aspect ratio is the shape of the image, not the quality. Some IMAX scenes reveal more picture on taller screens.

1.90

1.90 The common digital IMAX ratio. Taller than standard widescreen, used across most IMAX auditoriums. Width held constant: taller ratios reveal more above and below.

Why IMAX film is a different beast

An IMAX film camera is roughly the size of a small fridge; a standard digital cinema camera fits in your hands. Same scale below.

04

Is 70mm the same as IMAX 70mm?

No. Standard 70mm runs vertically through the projector. IMAX 70mm runs horizontally — a much larger frame, made for giant 1.43 screens.

Standard 70mm

Film runs vertically — 5 perforations per frame

IMAX 70mm

Film runs horizontally — 15 perforations per frame

IMAX 70mm captures roughly 3× the frame area.

The movie is switching between aspect ratios, often for IMAX-expanded scenes.

How reliable is the alpha database?
