What's the best movie format?

A guide to premium theater formats, screen shapes, and film types.

What does each format brand mean?

Brands describe the format of the screen and projector, but don't guarantee a set screen size, shape, or quality.

IMAX

The most well-known PLF brand, with bigger screens and sometimes a taller image, but with the most size variance among screens.

Tells you

A premium auditorium designed for scale and immersion.

Doesn't guarantee

The largest screen, laser projection, or a tall 1.43 aspect ratio.

Consider

Screen size, aspect ratio, projection type, and whether the movie expands in IMAX.

Is 70mm the same as IMAX 70mm?

No. Standard 70mm runs vertically through the projector. IMAX 70mm runs horizontally because it uses a much larger frame, made for huge 1.43 screens.

Standard 70mm

Film runs vertically — 5 perforations per frame

IMAX 70mm

Film runs horizontally — 15 perforations per frame

IMAX 70mm captures roughly 3× the frame area.
…filling a much taller 1.43 screen at the same width.
